Indo-China Agriculture JACKFRUIT

Our farms grow a Thai jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) cultivar known as “Carrot Jackfruit” because of its orange colored fruit arils rather than the common yellow colored arils of traditional Cambodian jackfruit.

OUR Jackfruit

We grow “Carrot Jackfruit” because it is more popular in markets and sells for a premium because of its sweeter taste and crunchy texture.

The cultivar used by our farms was also chosen because of the productive qualities that have been selected for this breed.

Jackfruit was a crop specifically chosen for our farms because of its perfect pH suitability to our well-drained soil and its matching intercropping root pattern.  Jackfruit can grow at an altitude 0-1,500 m and prefers our well-drained soils.

Producing More Fruit

The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), also known as jack tree, is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family (Moraceae).

First cultivated in India between 3,000 and 6,000 years ago, Jackfruit can grow up to 10 to 20 meters tall with a canopy radius of 5-7 meters.  It is now widely cultivated across SE Asia.

We follow the Vietnamese high density planting and pruning techniques to produce higher volumes with better fruit for market.

We utilise a combination of organic fertilizers and compost tea to ensure vigorous growth, precocious fruit set, and delicious fruit sweetness.

Jackfruit

Not just a fruit

Jackfruit wood is a hardwood that has a golden yellow timber grain.

It is prized by instrument makers and is often used for furniture as it is superior to teak.

Jackfruit wood is also utilized in the making of barrels used for fermenting fish sauce (“nuoc mam” in Vietnam).

Healthy & Tasty

Jackfruit has become one of the most popular vegetarian and vegan plant-based meat replacements.  This is due to the fact that young jackfruit “meat” can be cooked to resemble the texture of animal meats such as pulled-pork.  The young jackfruit when cooked will also take on the taste of the sauce it is mixed with which makes it a very versatile ingredient.

An innovative new product is jackfruit flour which has a low glycemic index (GI) value and can be used in baking for people sensitive to blood glucose spikes such as diabetics.

This innovative way to use the jackfruit could be the solution for diabetics to enjoy bread, pasta, or rice noodles such as ramen, chow mein, pho or pancit in the future.
